Personal agents
These run for you rather than for a codebase: they take requests, remember context, use your tools and often answer from chat apps.
1. CoWork OS
A free desktop app for macOS and Windows that packages a full agent runtime: documents, research, browser and desktop work, scheduled tasks, memory, MCP tools and chat channels such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Slack. Each task runs under an access profile that decides what it may touch and when it must ask first. Works with many cloud providers or local models through Ollama and MLX. Source · Local setup
2. OpenClaw
The most popular self-hosted personal agent: a gateway that connects WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, iMessage and more to AI agents, with a large skill ecosystem on ClawHub. Set up and run from the terminal. Source · Is OpenClaw safe?
3. Hermes Agent
Nous Research's "self-improving AI agent". It creates skills after complex tasks, refines them in use and curates its own memory, and serves several chat apps from one gateway. Source · OpenClaw vs Hermes
4. Goose
A general-purpose agent with a desktop app, CLI and API, now part of the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation. It connects to more than 70 MCP extensions and supports 15+ providers including Ollama. Source
5. Nanobot
An ultra-lightweight, self-hosted personal agent in Python from HKU, with a web UI, tools, memory and MCP. A good choice if you want to read the whole codebase. Source
Desktop workspaces
6. Eigent
An open-source "cowork desktop" built on CAMEL-AI's multi-agent framework, positioned as a local alternative to Claude Cowork. Its self-hosted mode supports local models. Source · Claude Cowork alternatives
Coding agents
7. OpenCode
"The open source AI coding agent", a terminal app with a desktop beta. You switch between a full-access build agent and a read-only plan agent. Source
8. Aider
AI pair programming in your terminal. It maps your whole codebase, commits changes with sensible messages and connects to almost any model, including local ones. Source
9. Cline
An autonomous coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains, the terminal and desktop, with Plan and Act modes and an approval step for each edit or command. Supports Ollama and LM Studio. Source
10. OpenHands
Now a self-hosted control centre for coding agents: it runs its own agent or third-party ones such as Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode across local, Docker, VM or cloud backends, with scheduled automations. Marked beta. Source
Browser agents
11. Browser Use
A Python library for AI browser agents that runs locally with any model, including Ollama. A hosted cloud with stealth browsers is a separate paid service. Source · Computer-use agents compared
Frameworks for building your own
12. LangGraph
A low-level orchestration framework for stateful agents, known for durable execution: agents persist through failures and resume where they stopped, with human-in-the-loop support. Source
13. CrewAI
A framework for teams of role-playing agents ("Crews") and event-driven workflows ("Flows"). It can use local models through Ollama. Note that its anonymous telemetry is on by default; set OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true to turn it off. Source
A note on AutoGen: Microsoft has archived AutoGen and no longer provides fixes or support. Its successor is Microsoft Agent Framework.
How to choose
- You want an assistant that does work for you: start with a personal agent. Pick CoWork OS for a desktop app with approvals, OpenClaw or Hermes for a terminal-first chat gateway, Goose for a general agent with many MCP extensions.
- You want help writing code: OpenCode, Aider or Cline, depending on whether you live in the terminal or the IDE.
- You are building a product: LangGraph or CrewAI.
- You need it fully private: check the local-models column, then see how to run an agent with Ollama.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best open-source AI agent?
It depends on the job. For a personal assistant, CoWork OS, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are the leading choices; for coding, OpenCode, Aider and Cline; for building your own agents, LangGraph and CrewAI.
Which open-source AI agents work with local models?
CoWork OS (Ollama and MLX), Goose, Nanobot, Aider, Cline, Browser Use and CrewAI all document local-model support, mostly through Ollama.
Is AutoGen still maintained?
No. Microsoft has archived AutoGen and points users to its successor, Microsoft Agent Framework.
What is the difference between an AI agent and an agent framework?
An agent is software you use directly to get work done. A framework is a library developers use to build agents. CoWork OS and OpenClaw are agents; LangGraph and CrewAI are frameworks.
CoWork OS itself is free and open source. Model providers, gateways, connected services, and account plans may charge separately and apply their own eligibility and usage rules.
