A personal AI agent on WhatsApp, no Business API needed
Most "AI agent for WhatsApp" products are customer-support tools built on the WhatsApp Business API. If you just want to message your own agent from your phone, you don't need any of that. CoWork OS links to your WhatsApp account as a linked device, the same way WhatsApp Web does, and runs the agent on your computer.
Personal WhatsApp vs WhatsApp Business
| Personal (linked device) | WhatsApp Business (Cloud API) | |
|---|---|---|
| For | Messaging your own agent | Businesses answering customers |
| Setup | Scan a QR code | Meta business account, phone number ID, access token, app secret, verify token |
| Needs a public webhook | No | Yes (HTTPS) |
| Default behaviour in CoWork OS | Self-chat mode: replies only in "Message yourself" | Ignores unauthorised senders silently |
CoWork OS supports both. This guide covers the personal setup.
1. Add the channel
- Install CoWork OS and connect a model.
- Open Settings → WhatsApp and click Add WhatsApp Channel.
2. Link your phone
On your phone, open WhatsApp → Settings → Linked Devices → Link a device, and scan the QR code shown in CoWork OS.
3. Message yourself
Self-Chat Mode is on by default, so the agent only replies in your "Message yourself" chat and stays silent everywhere else. Send it something like "What's on my calendar tomorrow?" or "Turn the voice note I just sent into a to-do list." Tasks follow the same access profile as on the desktop.
Keep in mind
- The agent runs where CoWork OS runs, so that computer needs to be on and online.
- Linked-device connections use an unofficial WhatsApp Web protocol. Use an account you are comfortable linking, and read WhatsApp's terms.
- For customer conversations at scale, use the WhatsApp Business channel instead.
Full options are in the channels documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an AI agent on WhatsApp without the Business API?
Yes. CoWork OS links to your personal WhatsApp as a linked device by scanning a QR code, like WhatsApp Web. No Business API account or webhook is needed.
Will the agent reply to my contacts?
Not by default. Self-Chat Mode is on, so it only replies in your "Message yourself" chat.
When should I use the WhatsApp Business API instead?
When a business needs to answer customers on its own number. CoWork OS has a separate WhatsApp Business channel for that, which needs a Meta business setup and a public HTTPS webhook.
Does my computer need to stay on?
Yes. The agent runs where CoWork OS runs. For always-on use, run it on a machine that stays online.
CoWork OS itself is free and open source. Model providers, gateways, connected services, and account plans may charge separately and apply their own eligibility and usage rules.
